Dance: Rhythm of Brush and Body
Rather than depicting dance movements, Lee Ungno focused on capturing their rhythm and dynamism. Through the tempo of his brushwork and physical movement, he visualized the rhythmic energy of the brush through the motif of dance. This approach reflects the 1950s~60s artistic climate, where Western and Eastern art intersected through 'action.' While Western art viewed painting as physical performance, East Asia similarly highlighted the abstract power of line. Within this context, Lee synthesized his calligraphic training with Western 'action' through dance, building a unique abstract style. Functioning as a fundamental principle of movement, this concept defined his work from the 1970s onward and laid the groundwork for his 1980s People series.
